Teaching Pharmacoeconomics at the University of Benin, Nigeria

Over 650 Pharmacists Learn Pharmacoeconomics with the Aid of Vanguard SystemTM

Cary, NC – April 1, 2009 – University of Benin, Nigeria renews its membership in the Vanguard Academic Partnership Program and continues using Vanguard System to help educate students and practitioners about pharmacoeconomic techniques in healthcare decision-making. As part of an initiative led by Udezi Anthony Waka, MPharm, MPSN, Faculty of Pharmacy in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Benin, pharmacoeconomics is now a required component in both the undergraduate and post-graduate PharmD curriculum. Udezi also serves as Coordinator for the University of Benin center of the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program (MCPD), and is a 2007 ISPOR International Fellowship Award recipient.

"As recently as early 2007, pharmacoeconomic lectures were theoretical and lacked examples from our local environment. To date, more than 650 pharmacists have been taught pharmacoeconomics through the MCPD program in five states of Nigeria with the aid of models built in Vanguard for local diseases such as malaria and typhoid fever," said Udezi. "Our partnership with Vanguard Software has huge potential benefits for my students and citizens of Nigeria."

Research projects using Vanguard System include:

  • Affordability of antimalarial drugs in Benin City, Nigeria.
  • Drug therapy problems: Does pharmacist’s intervention save cost?
  • Willingness to pay for three hypothetical antimalarial vaccines.
  • The cost of anemia in pediatric patients suffering from malaria.
  • Budget impact of drug formulary decisions in a Nigerian hospital.
  • Cost-effectiveness of antimalarials.
  • The cost of malaria in a semi-urban area in Nigeria.

These projects have resulted in poster presentations at international conferences from Dublin, Ireland to Orlando, Florida, USA:
