Vanguard Software Provides Software to Assist U.
of the West of England's Research in Aerospace Cost
Modeling
Cary, NC – November 14, 2006 – Vanguard
Software has partnered with the University of West
England (UWE) through Vanguard’s Academic
Partnership Program. As a part of this program, UWE will
receive a donation of the Vanguard System™, a
$160,000 value, which will go to UWE’s School of
Engineering Sciences. Through Vanguard Software’s
Academic Partnership Program, UWE has been able to
further its long-term strategic research links with many
blue chip organizations including Rolls-Royce, Airbus,
BAE systems, Microsoft, and IBM. Professor Jim Scanlan,
who leads the Computational Engineering and Design
Research Group in the School of Engineering Sciences at
Southampton and who liaises with these organizations and
Vanguard Software, says “Our research group works on
a number of research programs aimed at capturing and
integrating knowledge into the engineering design
process. The Vanguard product is unique and offers
organizations the ability to systematically capture and
deploy knowledge in a highly effective manner.”
Currently, Southampton has three specific ongoing
research programs in which it is using Vanguard’s
software: DATUM (Design Analysis Tool for Unit cost
Modeling) which involves capturing cost knowledge for
deployment to design engineers; IPAS – an expansion
of the DATUM program that is covering life cycle costing;
and, Flaviir which is aimed at UAV design and the
assessment of alternative design concepts in terms of
operational effectiveness and cost.

partnerships with educational institutions and their
